Today I went exploring Nottingham looking for abandoned or unused big spaces/buildings which might be suitable to fit the opera in - must fit 1000 people! Most of the buildings were either too dangerous and would certainly not be safe or either too small. But was really interesting to see and explore different spaces - good to start imagining the possibilities of what you can do in a space.
These photos are of the 'Marcus Garvey Ballroom' on Lenton Boulevard...
It is solely one big space with a stage, so not much movement or promenade could take place here. However the ceiling is amazingly high so the acoustics would be good!
These are photos from a snooker club called 'Hidden Spot' just off Alfreton Road...
The downstairs is a very big space filled with snooker tables - very low ceiling! Then upstairs there is two function rooms and one other big empty space with much higher ceilings than downstairs. Promenade could be quite successful here however I don't feel much character or atmosphere from the building.
